What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the site

A drainage tunnel is a place where the water can change height far faster than a person walks, and whoever is inside is the last to know, because they cannot see what is coming. Up above there is a picture nobody is watching. This promises nobody will be trapped: it makes the person up top see the height and the number of people while it is happening, so they can call before the only source of information is a call from below.

What people usually ask

How do you measure the height without a sensor?

With a reference that is already on the wall. The painted blue band, a joint, a step: anything fixed and visible that somebody marks once on the image will do. From then on the reading is how far the water still is from the band, which is what a worker would work out by looking. It is a reading against a visible reference, not a level sensor, and it neither replaces one nor claims to.

What if the tunnel is dark?

In a tunnel the lighting is part of the installation, and where it does not reach you add support lighting or a low-light camera, exactly as you would to see it with your eyes. What you do not do is promise a reading the image cannot give: if the scene cannot be seen, IRIS reports that it has lost the reference instead of inventing a height. An honest notice that it cannot see is worth more than a made-up number.

Does it keep tabs on the workers inside?

No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not read number plates, it does not compare against any database and it does not store who anybody is. It counts how many human figures are in frame, because that number changes what you do with the alert, and that is where it ends. Who each of them is, how long they take or how they work is not measured here and cannot be measured with this.
