What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the site
An inspection chamber is empty nearly all the time, and the stretch when somebody is inside is the stretch when work is going on. If water comes in while two people are down there, everything turns on when the person up top finds out. Today they find out when somebody below gets a signal, or when they climb out. IRIS prevents nothing and pulls nobody out: it puts the alert on the desk of the person up top while it is happening, with the number of people visible in the picture.
What people usually ask
How does it tell water coming in from water already there?
By movement. The rule is not looking at a still surface: it looks at the jet falling through the opening and the wave spreading from it, which behaves in the image in a way still water never does. And it does not fire on a drip: you tell it from how long and how persistently it should alert, exactly as with anything else. That line is drawn by the operator of the site, not by IRIS.
Is it any use for knowing whether somebody is still down there?
It is good for saying how many people are visible in frame while it is happening, and that already changes a phone call: reporting a flooded chamber is not the same as reporting a flooded chamber with two people inside. What it does not do is count them in any certified way or follow anybody through the network: it counts figures in an image, and if one is out of frame or hidden behind the cascade, it is not there. What is done with that number is decided by a person.
Does it recognise the workers or the people on the walkway?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not read number plates, it does not compare against any database and it does not store who anybody is. It tells that there are people and where they are, and nothing else. For the rule, the difference between the ones below and the ones above is where they stand, not who they are.
