Dock door open, and there’s no truck behind it

Nine thirty at dock 7. The door is up and there’s no trailer behind it: just the metal dock leveler and a good three feet of empty air down to the yard. A worker in a safety vest has leaned out over the edge. A forklift with a strapped pallet is coming straight at the door, and the light above it’s still green. IRIS sees the open door, sees there’s no trailer body behind it and sees traffic heading for the gap.

What IRIS understands

What it recognizes in this scene

  • open gap with no trailer behind
  • worker leaning over the edge
  • forklift approaching the dock
  • pallet on the forks
  • dock light showing green

What this camera measures

An alert says something’s happening. The reading says how much.

  • 09:38Time of the alert
  • 6 min 40 sTime the gap has been open
  • 3Forklifts that have passed the gap
  • 2People in frame
  • 2Alerts at this dock today

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client’s measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the dock door is open, there is no trailer body behind it and something enters the edge zone

Then

  1. alert the dock manager with the camera, the dock number and the time
  2. save the video from the moment the door was left with no trailer behind it
  3. time the open gap until somebody closes it or a truck arrives
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when a dock door is open with no truck behind it and a forklift or a person comes near.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A loaded forklift that goes over a dock edge tips sideways with the whole load on top of it, and nothing there stops it. And it almost always starts the same way: somebody raises the door too early, or the truck pulls away and the door stays up. With the camera, the dock manager finds out while the gap is open, not once somebody has already fallen. And he knows how long it’s been like that — which is exactly the figure nobody has today.

What people usually ask

How does it tell a dock with a truck from a dock without one?

By what you can see through the opening. With the trailer docked, behind the door there’s a closed body and a continuous floor; with no trailer there’s a dark background and the concrete edge. IRIS compares what it sees with the zone drawn over that door and alerts when it changes. No sensor on the dock leveler is needed: if the image shows it, the rule can be written and checked on the video.

The light is green. Does IRIS switch it to red?

No. IRIS alerts, it doesn’t act: it doesn’t switch the light, it doesn’t lower the door and it doesn’t stop the forklift. What it does is make plain that the light says one thing and the door says another, and put that in front of a person right away. That contradiction between the signal and reality is exactly what causes dock accidents, and until now nobody saw it until it was too late.

Does it also count how long the dock stays like that?

Yes. Besides alerting, IRIS times from the second the door is left with no trailer until a truck arrives or somebody closes it. At the end of the month that’s a list of docks and minutes, always measured the same way. A dock that shows up every week with the gap open for twenty minutes isn’t bad luck: it’s a procedure that needs changing, and now you can show it.

See it for yourself

Everything comes in. Only what matters gets through.

This sums up what IRIS does with one alert, from the moment it appears until it’s closed. The real screen holds far more; this is the main thread.

  1. Cameras on the map
  2. You draw an area
  3. What passed shows up

And the best part

A recording gets watched when nothing can be done.An alert lands while there’s still time to act.

IRIS raises the alert while it’s happening and says where: the camera, the time and the images from that moment. With that, whoever is on duty is still in time to act.

Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

A person answers, the same working day.
