Five in the morning in the pump room. Water has come in and covers the whole floor: the plinths of the two blue motors still show above it, and that is the only thing keeping them out of the water. It is still rising, and it already licks the foot of the electrical cabinets on the right-hand wall. A worker in a hard hat and hi-vis stops in the doorway, water halfway up his calf. What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A soaked motor gets replaced. A soaked switchboard leaves half the network without pumping and turns the room into a dangerous place for anyone who walks in. Minutes separate the two. IRIS alerts when water shows up where there is never water, and again when it reaches the height the plant marked as the limit. The alert arrives with the camera, the time and the video of the moment it started coming in. Cutting the power and going in or staying out is a person's call.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know how much water is in the room?

Not in litres. A camera sees how far the water has come against something visible in the frame: a motor plinth, a step, the base of a cabinet. That is enough to raise the alert and to decide whether to go in. The exact figure comes from a level probe, and IRIS works alongside that probe: it supplies the picture and the minute the water passed the mark.

Can IRIS stop the pumps or cut the power?

No. IRIS alerts; it does not operate anything. It does not stop a pump, it does not open a gate and it does not trip a board. It sends the alert to whoever the plant has designated, with the camera, the time and the video, and that person decides what happens. The rule about what counts as an alert and who receives it is also written by the plant, not by IRIS.

Does it work at night or with the room in the dark?

Yes, as long as the camera can see. Under emergency lighting or with infrared, water still stands out: what changes is the shine and the movement of the floor. If the room goes completely dark and the camera has no infrared, there is no image and no alert. That is why the point where water gets in is covered by a camera that copes with low light.
