CAM-400

Water is coming up through the cover and the street is a river

Early afternoon, right outside the pumping station. Murky water is surging up through a shifted manhole cover and covering half the roadway. A vacuum tanker is parked with its hose already run out and three crew members are working around it. Two yellow barriers and a few cones close off the street. On the kerb, a metre from the water, a couple stands watching. By the time somebody phones it in, the pool has been growing for a long while.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • wastewater on the roadway
  • shifted manhole cover
  • vacuum tanker
  • street closure barrier
  • residents next to the water

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 17 mintime since the water first came up
  • 3people on foot next to the water
  • 3service crew on site
  • 2barriers put in place
  • 13:42time of the first alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

water comes up through a cover or manhole and the pool grows across the roadway

Then

  1. open a critical alert for the on-call crew
  2. save the video from one minute before the water first came up
  3. send the still with the camera, the time and the point in the street
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if water comes up through a manhole or a cover and spreads across the street.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A sewage overflow is an environmental case file and a public health problem. The known causes are nearly always the same: a blockage, a burst, a storm overload or a power failure at the pumping station. The person on call cannot watch a hundred cameras at once, so they find out when a neighbour phones. IRIS raises the alert as the water starts coming up, with the camera, the minute and the video. The tanker rolls sooner and the spill stays small.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know whether the water coming out is contaminated?

No. IRIS sees the water coming up, the shifted cover and the pool growing. Water quality and pollutant load are measured in the laboratory. The camera contributes the exact minute and the video, so the sample is taken in the right place and as soon as possible.

Can IRIS stop the pump or close the street?

No. IRIS alerts and hands over the evidence: the camera, the time and the video. Stopping equipment or closing a street is a person's decision. The rule for what counts as an alert is written by the operator, not by the camera.

Does it recognise the people standing in the street?

No. IRIS identifies no one and compares no faces with anything. It detects situations: that there are people standing next to the water, not who they are. The alert says how many and where, and that is enough to decide whether to close off the area.

The real interface, step by step

A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.

An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.

  1. You draw the line
  2. It counts by itself
  3. A number comes out

And the best part

“The white van, Tuesday afternoon.”That is enough to find it.

You type it the way you would tell a colleague, and the matching minutes come back, each with its camera and its time. You do not need to remember the exact moment.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
