Does IRIS also detect the gas detector the operator should be carrying?
No, and this has to be said plainly. IRIS sees the harness, the hard hat, the vest and the footwear: things worn on the outside that show up in the image. Gas is measured by the personal detector the person carries, and no camera replaces that measurement. Down a chamber, that is somebody’s life. The camera reports what is visibly missing; the atmosphere is measured by the instrument.
Does it identify who is missing the hard hat?
No. IRIS does not recognise faces and does not compare them against any list. The alert says “a person with no hard hat on the north clarifier walkway”, with the camera and the time. Who it was is worked out, if needed, by the supervisor on shift. The camera detects situations, not people, and that difference is what makes the system acceptable to a workforce.
Can it get it wrong if the vest or the harness is hidden?
Yes. If the person has their back turned, is crouching or is hidden behind equipment, the image may not be enough, and the rule takes that into account: a minimum period of clear view is required before an alert goes out. That is why the camera is placed looking along the walkway from a point where the whole body is visible, and not just anywhere. A poor framing gives poor alerts, and that is checked before it is signed off.
