CAM-419

The system is still running and there is nobody at the desk

Ten past ten in the morning in the control room of the drinking water plant. The screens along the curved desk are still on, schematics and curves moving, and the cabinet on the left has its indicator lights alive. The chair is empty, turned towards the desk. Through the windows you can see the settling tanks. On the cabinet to the right sits a hard hat. The room is working; there is nobody at the desk.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • operator chair empty
  • desk screens still on
  • control desk of the room
  • mimic panel with its lights alive
  • hard hat left on the cabinet

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 0people in the room
  • 1desk chairs empty
  • 6screens on in the room
  • 18 mintime with nobody at the desk
  • 10:10time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the desk is left with nobody for longer than agreed, inside the time band the company marked as attended

Then

  1. opens an alert with the room, the time and how long the desk has been empty
  2. notifies the shift manager on the channel that was agreed, and nobody else
  3. records the gap, with nobody's name attached, so the procedure can be reviewed
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if the control room desk is left with nobody for more than fifteen minutes inside the hours it has to be attended.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

The company decided that in this time band this desk is attended. If it stops being attended, whoever is in charge wants to know that same morning. It could be a handover running long, a walk out to the settling tanks, or someone taken ill, and all three call for a phone call. The alert arrives with the room, the time, how long it has been empty and the video, and whoever receives it decides. None of this is switched on without agreeing it first with the workforce representatives.

What people usually ask

Is this monitoring employees?

No, and the difference is everything. IRIS sees that a desk is empty. It does not know who should be sitting there, it recognises nobody, it follows no person around the plant and it measures nobody's performance. The rule — which desk, which time band and how many minutes — is written by the company, agreed with the workforce representatives before anything is switched on, and explained to the people who work in that room.

Why alert about an empty desk in a water plant?

Because that room is where process alarms get answered. If one goes off and nobody is in front of the screens, the alarm waits. The alert is not looking for who is missing: it is looking for someone to cover the desk, or for the shift to be recognised as short-handed. Often the reason is a good one — a walk out to the settling tanks — and one phone call settles it.

What does IRIS keep from an alert like this?

The room, the time, how long the desk was left with nobody, and the video of that stretch. Nothing else. There is no name, no personal record and no history of anybody. Who was on shift is in the company's rota, not in IRIS, and the log exists to review the procedure, not to point at a person.

The real interface, step by step

A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.

An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.

And the best part

Stop scrubbing through six hours.Ask what happened and watch only that.

You type what you are looking for in plain words — a white van, a door left open — and the moments it appears come back. What used to take an afternoon now takes minutes.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
