A loader is reversing and someone is walking behind it
Late afternoon on the tipping yard. A wheel loader is reversing down the manoeuvring lane with a full bucket and both red rear lights on. A worker in a yellow vest is walking along that same lane, back turned, three metres from the rear wheel. From the cab he cannot be seen: he is in the blind spot. IRIS sees the machine moving backwards and the person on foot in the same lane, at the same time.

What it recognises in this scene
- worker on foot
- wheel loader
- reversing lights
- loaded bucket
- cardboard skip
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 3 mgap to the machine
- 9 stime reversing
- 1people on foot
- 1machines in the lane
- 16:42time of the alert
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
a machine reverses and a person on foot is inside the manoeuvring lane
Then
- alert the operator and the yard supervisor right away
- save the video from before the reversing started
- log the camera, the time and the gap between person and machine
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when a machine reverses and there is someone on foot in the same lane.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
The plant manager finds out while it is happening, not after the near miss. The alert arrives with the camera, the time and the video of those seconds, so the discussion stops being about who is right and becomes what we change: a separate walkway, a banksman, a different manoeuvring direction. And at the end of the month there is a count of how many times a person on foot and a machine shared the same lane. That is what goes to the safety committee.
What people usually ask
Can IRIS tell a person on foot from another machine?
Yes. IRIS separates the shape of a person walking from that of a vehicle, and only alerts when both meet inside the watched area: a machine moving backwards and someone on foot in the lane. An operator sitting in a cab does not trigger it. What counts as the manoeuvring lane, and at what distance the alert should fire, is decided by the plant, not by the camera.
Can IRIS stop the machine?
No. IRIS does not act on any equipment: it alerts. It sends the alert to the operator and the supervisor with the camera, the time and the video, and a person decides whether to stop, step aside or change the manoeuvre. If the plant wants an automatic stop, that is a machine safety system, not a video system.
Does IRIS recognise who the worker is?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone and does not compare faces against any database. It detects situations: there is a person on foot where a machine is reversing. The alert carries the camera, the time and the picture of what happened, not anybody's name.

The school
Who sees the child who has fallen at the far end of the playground?
13 cases: 12 raise an alert when something happens and 1 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Critical infrastructure
Who is watching a site where there is almost never anybody?
44 cases, and in every one of them IRIS raises an alert when something happens. You see each image as it is, and then with what it understands on top.
And the best part
A recording gets watched when nothing can be done.An alert lands while there is still time to act.
IRIS raises the alert while it is happening and says where: the camera, the time and the images from that moment. With that, whoever is on duty is still in time to act.
