CAM-432

He is clearing a jam with the press still live

Half past nine in the baler room. A worker in a white helmet and reflective jacket has climbed onto the edge of the machine and is leaning half his body into the compaction mouth, pulling the jam clear by hand. To his right the stack light is green and the control panel screen is lit: the press is available to start. Above, the conveyor keeps dropping paper onto the machine. There is no padlock hanging anywhere.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • person inside the mouth
  • press mouth open
  • stack light on green
  • control panel powered up
  • conveyor still feeding

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 26 stime with the body inside
  • 14 mintime on green
  • 0lockout padlocks in view
  • 1people on the machine
  • 09:35time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a person enters the press mouth and the machine is still signalled as available

Then

  1. alert the shift supervisor and the control room right away
  2. save the video from the moment the person climbed onto the press
  3. log the camera, the time and how long the body was inside
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if someone puts their body inside the press and the machine is not stopped and locked off.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

This is the second thing that kills in this sector, and it is not the previous one: nobody crosses a fence here, there is a person half inside the machine while it is still live. All it takes is somebody pressing start. IRIS sees what can be seen: the body inside the mouth, the signal green and no lockout padlock hanging where it should be. It does not verify that the energy is isolated, the isolation procedure does that, but it alerts while the person is still inside and leaves the video of the exact minute.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS check that the press is locked off?

No. A camera cannot see whether the isolator is open or whether stored energy is still in the machine. IRIS sees the body inside the mouth, the stack light on green and no padlock hanging where it should be: that is enough to alert while it is happening. Isolating the energy is guaranteed by the lockout procedure and the person who signs it, not by video.

The worker pressed stop. Is that not enough?

No, and that is why the alert fires anyway. Stopping a machine is not the same as leaving it without energy and locked with a padlock. While the panel stays green, anyone can restart it from another point. IRIS alerts on what can be seen, a person inside and the machine available, and the shift supervisor decides whether the work stops.

Can the video be used in an incident investigation?

Yes. The alert is stored with the camera, the time and the video of the minutes before and after, so the investigation starts from pictures instead of versions. It also works the other way round: proving that a job was done with the machine stopped. IRIS does not identify anyone; it leaves the scene and the minute.

The real interface, step by step

A new case each time. Always the same screen.

It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It is a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.

  1. The rule gets built
  2. It goes to every camera
  3. Published, it watches alone
  4. And then it fires

And the best part

You have cameras to spare. What you run out of is eyes to watch them.

One person can follow two or three screens. Nobody can follow forty. IRIS watches them all and speaks up when someone needs to decide.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
