CAM-435

The liquid has left the bund and is running across the concrete

Midday on the concrete apron. The liquid waste tank, green and lying on its legs, has a dark stain at its foot that has already crossed the edge of the containment and is running down the ground towards the lane the trucks come in by. Two workers in helmets and hi-vis are standing right at the edge of the stain. IRIS sees a liquid spreading outside the area meant to hold it, and still growing.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • liquid stain outside the containment
  • liquid waste tank
  • edge of the containment bund
  • two workers at the edge of the spill
  • collection truck coming in

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 11 minTime since the stain appeared
  • 12:26Time of the alert
  • 2People in shot
  • 3Vehicles on the apron
  • 4Containers next to the path of the liquid

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a liquid appears outside the containment area and the stain keeps growing

Then

  1. alert the plant manager and the environmental officer with the camera and the time
  2. save the video from before the first stain appeared
  3. log the exact time and the starting point in the report for the environmental record
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a pool appears outside the tank bund and keeps growing.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A spill that gets past the containment stops being the plant’s own problem: it reaches the drain, and from the drain the sewer. That is a file with the regulator. Seeing it after eleven minutes instead of at the end of the shift changes who cleans it and what it costs. The camera does not say which liquid it is — the tank label or a lab test says that — but it gives the exact time, the video and the point where it started.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know which liquid has spilled?

No. It sees a dark stain leaving the containment and growing, and that is what it reports. What is inside is told by the tank label, the delivery note or a lab test: a camera does not confirm a chemical. What IRIS adds is the exact time, the point where it started and the video, which is exactly what you need to react fast and to write the report afterwards.

Does it mistake rain for a spill?

No, not if the rule is written properly. A whole wet apron is not a spill; what raises the alert is a stain that starts at one point, crosses the edge of the containment and keeps growing when it is no longer raining. That distinction is the plant’s call, not ours: where the camera looks, how much the stain has to grow and when it becomes an alert is written by the people who know the site.

Does it close the valve or stop the transfer?

No. IRIS does not act on anything: it alerts a person and shows them the video. Stopping a transfer pump, moving the truck off the apron or calling the emergency service are decisions the shift supervisor makes, with the information in front of them. The camera works alongside the plant’s systems; it does not replace them and it does not give them orders.

Watch what happens. Then watch what IRIS does with it.

Not a recorded video and not a drawing: it is a summary of the real tool, with a different case each time round. The whole tool does not fit in a box.

  1. The alert fires
  2. You open it
  3. You confirm or dismiss

And the best part

What you bought was a warehouse of images. What you needed was someone to look at them.

Those same cameras that only fill disks today can flag what matters while it is happening. The warehouse stays; it just stops being all you have.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
