A valve hanging from the crane and a man right underneath
A lifting job in the tank yard. A large steel valve, its blue handwheel in plain sight, hangs from two slings hooked to the yellow crane. Underneath, almost directly below the load, a worker in blue coveralls and a yellow helmet is talking on the radio. He is not looking up. Orange cones mark out the ground, but he is inside them. The camera sees the load in the air and sees the person below it.

What IRIS understands
What it recognises in this scene
- person under the load
- valve hanging from the slings
- crane hook
- mobile crane
- stack of pipe
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 2 min 05 sTime with the load in the air
- 1People under the load
- 5People on the lift
- 4Cones marking out the ground
- 10:38Time of the alert
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
a load is hanging from the hook and a person moves directly underneath it
Then
- open the alert with the camera, the time and the video of the lift
- call the crane operator and the banksman over the radio
- keep the video clip for the lift plan review
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if anyone goes underneath a load while it is hanging from the crane.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
Nobody walks under a suspended load, and yet people do. The alert goes out while the valve is still in the air, with the camera, the time and the video: the crane operator hears it on the radio and the lift stops before anything comes down. IRIS identifies nobody: it sees that a person is directly below the load, not who that person is. And it does not command the crane or brake the hook. What it adds is that someone finds out now, not tomorrow while reviewing the footage.
What people usually ask
How does IRIS know there is a suspended load?
Because it sees it. The camera tells apart the hook, the slings and the piece hanging in the air, and it tells apart the ground below. That is what the area which must stay clear during the lift is drawn on. Nothing has to be wired to the crane: the rule works on the image.
Can IRIS stop the crane?
No. IRIS alerts, it does not act. It does not brake the hook and it does not lock the controls. What it does is make sure the crane operator and the banksman find out while the load is still up, with the camera and the video of the moment. Stopping the lift is decided and done by a person.
What if the banksman has to be close to the load?
The zone is drawn together with the plant. People work near the load; nobody works directly underneath it. The rule is set to the vertical and to the radius the lift plan defines, and from then on it only fires when someone steps where nobody may stand. What counts as a no-go zone is decided by the plant, not by IRIS.

A different case every time
Watch what happens. Then watch what IRIS does with it.
Not a recorded video and not a drawing: it is a summary of the real tool, with a different case each time round. The whole tool does not fit in a box.

Public safety
What can a camera see without pointing at anyone?
13 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 4 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Data centres
What if the outage does not start with an attack?
13 cases, and in every one of them IRIS raises an alert when something happens. You see each image as it is, and then with what it understands on top.
And the best part
You cannot describe a line with a sentence. You have to draw it on the image.
Asking is for finding; counting is for measuring. That is why the number comes out the same every day, and why people counting is certified by the Centro Español de Metrología.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
