The tank hatch is open and nobody is up there

Mid-morning on the tank roof. The hatch is open: the round cover is tipped up to one side and the hole shows black from above. Inside the yellow roof railing there is nobody. Down below, a worker in a yellow helmet has his back turned, busy with something else, and another crosses in the distance. The tank ladder is clear. IRIS sees that this cover has been open for a good while and that no work is going on up there.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • open hatch
  • cover tipped up to one side
  • tank roof, with nobody on it
  • ladder up to the roof
  • worker below, back turned to the tank
  • worker crossing in the distance

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 41 minTime the hatch has been open
  • 0People on the roof
  • 2People in shot
  • 2Openings counted today
  • 10:23Time it was opened

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a tank hatch stays open for more than ten minutes with nobody working on the roof

Then

  1. alert the area supervisor with the tank, the camera and the time it was opened
  2. save the video of the moment the cover was opened
  3. keep timing and close the alert when the cover is back in place
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a tank hatch has been open for more than ten minutes with nobody working up there.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A hatch nobody closed is one of those things you only find on the next round, or the next day. Meanwhile the tank is breathing to open air and the work permit is already closed. With the camera, the supervisor knows which cover is open, since what time, and whether anyone is working up there. Most of the time it is fixed with a phone call, before it becomes a report.

What people usually ask

How does IRIS know whether the opening was authorised?

Through the rule the plant writes, not on its own. What the camera sees is simple: the cover is open and there is nobody up there. The plant decides when that is normal — an operating window, a particular shift, an open work order — and when it deserves an alert. Outside that window, an open cover with nobody there is what gets flagged.

Does it identify who left the cover open?

No. IRIS does not recognise faces and does not compare anybody against any list. It detects situations: “a hatch is open and there is nobody on the roof”. If somebody wants to know who it was, the video of the opening is stored with its time and a person with the authority to do so looks at it, which is not the same as the system saying it by itself.

Does the same apply to an open valve or an uncovered pit?

Yes, it is the same idea. The camera always looks at the same point, so it knows what that point looks like when everything is where it should be: the cover on, the handwheel in position, the pit closed. What gets flagged is the difference, and how long it has lasted. For each point, the plant writes how long open is normal.

Simulation · how IRIS works

A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.

An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.

And the best part

Nothing changes on the wall.On the screen, everything changes.

Same brackets, same cabling, same cameras. The only difference is that those images are now understood as they come in, instead of waiting for someone to open them.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
