Flame and smoke in the pump row
Early afternoon. In the middle of the pump row there is a live flame and a column of dark smoke rising as high as the walkways. Six workers in blue coveralls are in shot: one is pointing, another has the radio at his face, two are backing away towards the walkway. Nobody is left beside the fire. What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
In a big plant, what costs time is knowing WHERE. The alarm sounds, and minutes go by before somebody confirms which area it is. With the camera, the alert already carries the picture: you see the flame, you see the smoke and you see who is still nearby. The emergency officer decides on that, not on a description over the radio. And if it turns out it was steam and not smoke, that shows too, and half the plant is not evacuated.

Does IRIS detect a gas leak before it catches fire?
No, not if the gas is transparent. A camera sees smoke, flame and visible vapour; a colourless gas is simply not in the picture, and that needs a dedicated detector. What IRIS brings here is the other half: it sees the flame and the smoke as soon as they appear and says which camera, so nobody has to guess the area over the radio.
How does it tell smoke from steam?
By where it is and by how it behaves in the picture. A white cloud that always comes out of the same steam trap at the same hour is not the same as a dark column that appears out of nowhere where nothing ever comes out. The plant writes down which plumes are normal on each camera. And when there is doubt, the alert arrives with the video, and a person settles it in seconds.
Does IRIS trigger the general alarm or release the foam?
No. IRIS alerts and shows; it does not act. It triggers no systems, closes no valves and evacuates nobody: the emergency officer decides that. What changes is that the decision is taken with the image and the exact minute in front of them, instead of with a description over the radio.
