CAM-330

Someone has walked into the red zone around the valve skid

Mid-morning in the process unit. The floor carries a red painted enclosure with white stripes: it marks the radius around the valve skid, and nobody steps inside without a permit. A worker in blue coveralls and a white helmet is walking straight through it, towards the equipment. Outside, two colleagues in yellow vests are talking on the radio and never see him. The camera sees the paint on the floor, and sees that someone has stepped on it.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • person inside the red zone
  • red enclosure around the skid
  • valve skid
  • colleagues outside the enclosure
  • windsock

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 38 sTime inside the zone
  • 1People inside
  • 3People outside
  • 6 mMetres to the painted edge
  • 10:41Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a person enters the red enclosure around the skid and is still inside after a few seconds

Then

  1. open the alert with the camera, the time and the video of the entry
  2. send it to the shift radio and to the control room
  3. keep the video clip for the work permit review
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if someone walks into the red zone around the valve skid and stays there.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Whoever runs the plant finds out while the person is still inside, not when someone mentions it the next day. The alert arrives with the camera, the time and the video of the moment the painted line was crossed. That is enough to call over the radio and get the person out. IRIS identifies nobody: it sees that someone crossed a boundary, not who they are. And it stops nothing: who leaves, and when, is decided by a person.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know who walked into the red zone?

No. IRIS sees that a person crossed the painted edge and how long they have been inside. It does not recognise faces and does not compare them with any list. The alert says one person inside the red enclosure, never a name. Who it was is worked out afterwards, from the video and the work permit, and it is a person who does that.

Who decides where the red zone is?

The plant does. The zone is drawn on the camera image, following the paint that is already on the floor, and it is adjusted when the operation changes. IRIS does not write the rule: it applies the one drawn for it. If the enclosure is open one day for authorised work, the rule is switched off for as long as that work lasts.

Does IRIS shut the equipment down when someone walks in?

No. IRIS alerts, it does not act. It does not close a valve, it does not stop a pump and it does not send anyone anywhere. What it does is put the camera, the time and the video of the moment in front of the control room. Deciding what to do remains a person’s job.

Simulation · how IRIS works

A new case each time. Always the same screen.

It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It is a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.

  1. The rule gets built
  2. It goes to every camera
  3. Published, it watches alone
  4. And then it fires

And the best part

What holds on camera oneholds on camera four thousand, with nothing to copy by hand.

A rule is stated once and applies everywhere. And it says the same thing on Sunday night as on Tuesday morning, whoever is on call.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
