The face is coming down with someone underneath

Mid-morning at the quarry. A block breaks off the bench face and a curtain of rock and dust comes down. At the foot, a worker in a white helmet and hi-vis vest stands a few metres away, looking up. Between him and the fall there is only a wire fence and a strip of barrier tape. On the bench above, an excavator and a truck are still working. IRIS sees that the material has moved and raises the alert while it is still falling.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • material coming off the face
  • worker at the foot of the face
  • rock piled at the foot of the bench
  • fence and barrier tape at the foot of the bench
  • excavator working the bench above

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 38 sTime since the first block
  • 1People at the foot of the face
  • 9Fallen blocks counted
  • 2Machines on the bench above
  • 11:42Time of the fall

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

material falls from the bench face and there is a person at the foot

Then

  1. alert the control room with the camera, the bench and the time
  2. save the video from thirty seconds before the fall
  3. count the people and machines left inside the area
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if material comes off the face, and whether anyone was underneath at that moment.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Today this reaches the office by radio and shouting, or it does not reach it at all. With the camera, the quarry manager gets the alert with the bench, the time and the video of the fall, and knows straight away that somebody was standing below. The next day he can compare the shape of the face with yesterday’s and see how much material is missing: that is measuring, and it helps decide where nobody works. When the next block will come down, no camera can say.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS warn before the rock falls?

No. IRIS raises the alert while the rock is falling, not before. What it does do is measure: it compares today’s face geometry with yesterday’s and shows where material is missing or where the profile has changed. That is a measurement taken from images, and it helps you decide. Predicting the moment of a fall is beyond any camera: that is the job of geotechnical instrumentation.

Can it tell whether anyone was underneath?

Yes. The camera counts how many people and machines are inside the area at the second the material comes down, and saves the video. It does not say who anyone is: it identifies nobody and recognises no faces. It says there is one person at the foot of the bench, and that tells the rescue team where to look first.

Does it replace geotechnical slope monitoring?

No. Radar, inclinometers and instrumented monitoring keep doing their job. IRIS adds the image, the exact minute, who was in the area and a day-to-day comparison of the visible geometry. It is one more layer of information, alongside the instruments and not instead of them.

The real interface, step by step

You set the rule once. IRIS applies it every time.

You will see a summary of the interface, played step by step and hands-free. Each round starts with another case. The complete tool does not fit in a demo.

  1. Four cameras at once
  2. Each understands its own view
  3. The numbers climb by themselves

And the best part

You have cameras to spare. What you run out of is eyes to watch them.

One person can follow two or three screens. Nobody can follow forty. IRIS watches them all and speaks up when someone needs to decide.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
