What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

The kiln is run from the control room through the process system. What the control room cannot see is the yard: how much material has fallen outside, how far it has spread across the painted floor lines and who is walking towards it. With the camera, the plant manager gets the alert straight away, with the image of the spill, how long it has been there and how many people are in the yard. It helps close the area before anyone walks in, and afterwards it helps reconstruct what happened and at what time.

What people usually ask

Do you need a thermal camera to see the hot material?

For this case, no. Red-hot clinker and flame show up in a normal image, at night too, because they give off their own light. A thermal camera adds something different: reading the heat of a surface that is not glowing, such as a hot shell or casing. For an incandescent spill on the yard, the colour camera already sees it, and records the exact time it started.

Does it tell fire apart from a sun reflection or a welding arc?

Yes, and the plant tunes when it wants the alert. IRIS looks at how the bright patch moves and changes over time, not at a single flash, and the yard area is drawn on the image so that a reflection on a roof does not count. Even so, what deserves an alert and what does not is written by the plant in the rule, and it can be tuned with the video from the first few days.

Does IRIS measure the temperature of the material?

Not with a colour camera: it sees that there is glowing material and fire, and where it is. Temperature comes from the kiln sensors and, if one is installed, from a calibrated thermal camera. IRIS works alongside the process system: the control room has the kiln reading, and the camera adds the picture of the yard, how far the material reached and the exact minute it came out.
