A dust cloud covers the crusher and nothing is spraying

Midday at the quarry. A thick dust cloud rises off the crusher and spreads over the haul roads and the whole yard. A loaded truck climbing the road on the left throws up more dust. Two workers cross the yard on foot, one in a yellow vest and one in an orange one, neither wearing respiratory protection. Nowhere in the frame is there a single jet of water. IRIS sees the cloud and sees that the suppression is not spraying.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • dust cloud over the crusher
  • truck raising dust on the haul road
  • worker on foot with no respiratory protection
  • second worker crossing the yard
  • output belt from the crusher

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 6 minTime the cloud has been up
  • 2People on foot inside the cloud
  • 5Dust episodes counted today
  • 11Trucks past on the haul road in an hour
  • 13:20Time of the episode

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a dense dust cloud appears over the crusher and no water is visible from the sprays

Then

  1. alert the environmental manager with the camera and the time
  2. save the video from the moment the cloud starts to grow
  3. time how many minutes the cloud lasts in each episode
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when there is a dust cloud over the crusher and the sprays are not running.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Quarry dust is a health problem over ten years and a neighbour problem within ten minutes. Today it is spotted when somebody complains. With the camera, the manager knows what time the cloud rises, how long it lasts and whether the sprays were running. With that he can line the worst hours up against production and against the wind, and he can show the authorities a dated record of when the suppression comes on.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS measure how much dust is in the air?

No. IRIS sees the cloud and sees whether the sprays are running or not. Respirable dust concentration is measured by an occupational hygiene team, with a sampler and a laboratory, and no camera replaces that. What IRIS adds is the exact time of every episode and video evidence of whether the suppression was working.

Is it any use to prove the sprays are working?

Yes. Every alert leaves the time, the duration and an image of the area with water and without it. With those records you can show the authorities or the neighbours when the suppression comes on, for how long and at what times of day. It is dated visual evidence, not a statement.

Can it warn when someone enters the cloud without a mask?

Yes. The camera sees whether a person is wearing the mask and whether they are inside the dusty area, and it warns. It sees the equipment, not the person: it detects that somebody is crossing without protection, not who they are. If the mask is hanging round the neck, that shows too, and it is one of the most common situations of all.

Demo · IRIS at work

You set the rule once. IRIS applies it every time.

You will see a summary of the interface, played step by step and hands-free. Each round starts with another case. The complete tool does not fit in a demo.

And the best part

There are nights of thick fogwhen the image gives you nothing. We do not dress that up.

Backlight, heavy rain, a street lamp that has blown. IRIS works with what the camera puts in front of it; when there is no image, it says so instead of inventing an answer.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
