A pillar weld seam that has not closed properly

Body shop. An unpainted body leaves the welding station on its skid. At the joint between the front pillar and the roof there is a seam highlighted in red: from the outside it looks uneven. Two inspectors in helmets and hi-vis stand beside it; one points at the spot with his hand, the other notes it on a tablet. To the left, the orange arms of the cell. Behind, the next body rolls in. IRIS sees the outer seam and flags the unit.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • pillar seam highlighted
  • joint between roof and side panel
  • unpainted body on the skid
  • inspector pointing at the joint
  • inspector noting it on the tablet
  • welding robot cell

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 1Joints flagged on this unit
  • 2Bodies in shot
  • 3People in shot
  • 3 minTime since the alert
  • 5Joints flagged this shift

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the outer seam between the pillar and the roof comes out uneven or incomplete

Then

  1. alert the body shop with the camera, the time and the body number
  2. save the picture of the joint and the video of the body leaving the cell
  3. flag the unit for review before it goes into paint
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if the pillar-to-roof seam comes out uneven as the body leaves the cell.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

In the body shop a badly closed seam usually turns up in sample inspection, and by then twenty bodies have gone through. Watching the outside of the same joint on every unit, with a timestamp, gives the body shop manager something he does not have today: which body it started on and which cell it lines up with. The repair is the same as always; what changes is how many units end up in the batch to be reviewed.

What people usually ask

Can a camera validate a weld?

No. A camera sees the seam from the outside: whether it is missing, uneven, has spatter, or whether the panel has not seated properly. The internal integrity of the joint is settled by testing or ultrasound, not by an image. IRIS flags what is visible and stamps it with a time and a unit number; the verdict is signed off by quality with its own method.

Does it cover every joint or only some of them?

The ones the camera can see. You pick the outer seams that matter at that station and watch the same framing on every body, so every unit is compared the same way. Joints inside the structure or hidden by another panel are not visible from there, and that is said up front instead of promised and regretted later.

Does IRIS stop the line when it finds a bad seam?

No. IRIS does not act: it alerts and saves the image. Stopping the line, flagging the unit or letting it run on to review is a person’s decision. The rule for what deserves an alert is written by the plant too: which joint is watched, how strictly and who gets told is agreed before anything is switched on.

A different case every time

Watch what happens. Then watch what IRIS does with it.

Not a recorded video and not a drawing: it is a summary of the real tool, with a different case each time round. The whole tool does not fit in a box.

And the best part

A recollection cannot be checked.A number can, and it comes out the same every day.

The number does not depend on who was on shift or how they remember it. It is measured the same way every day, and that is why people counting is certified by the Centro Español de Metrología.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
