A dent that leaves the line ends up in the finishing yard, where it gets repaired with the car fully built and the body already painted. Flagging the panel and the gap at the station itself, with an image and a time, gives the finishing manager two things: an earlier repair, and the knowledge of whether the dent keeps appearing on the same side at the same hour. When it repeats, it stops being an accident and becomes a station to review.

Can IRIS tell a scratch from a reflection?
It depends on the light, which is why the bay is set up with the light banks on and the same framing on every unit. Under that lighting IRIS separates a dent or a scratch from a highlight well enough. When the image is doubtful it raises the alert anyway and leaves the picture: looking at one photo too many is cheaper than letting a dented panel out.
Does it measure the gap between panels?
It compares, which is not the same thing. IRIS looks at the door-to-wing gap against the same stretch on earlier units and raises an alert when it comes out uneven. A figure in millimetres with metrological standing needs a measuring fixture. The camera is there to show that this unit does not look like the others, and at what time that started.
Can you find out at which station the dent was made?
Sometimes, yes. If there are cameras at the earlier stations, you trace the same unit backwards and see where the panel was still clean. That narrows it to two or three stations. IRIS does not claim it on its own: it hands over the sequence of images with their timestamps and a person decides which station to go and look at.
