The gate left open onto the street

A street-level transformer unit on a neighbourhood corner. The green gate has been left wide open: the pavement and the inside are now the same place. A man walks past in front of it and, a few metres further on, another one is walking a dog. Inside, the transformer, in plain view, a few steps from the pavement.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • gate standing wide open
  • open way in from the street
  • person walking past
  • passer-by with a dog
  • transformer inside the unit

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 11 minOpen for
  • 6People who have walked past
  • 2People in shot
  • 0People inside the compound
  • 2Vehicles on the street
  • 18:35Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the gate stays open for longer than the site allows

Then

  1. alert the control room with the camera, the time and the video
  2. call the on-call team so somebody goes out to close it
  3. log how long it stayed open and how many people walked past
The instruction that set it up«Tell me as soon as the gate is left open for more than a few minutes, and make it more urgent if people are walking past.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the site

A street-level transformer unit with its gate open is one of those things you sleep badly on. You do not have to imagine anything sinister: a child going in after a ball is enough. And it is left open almost always for the same reasons: a visit leaving in a hurry, a latch that does not catch, the wind. Today nobody finds out until the next visit, which may be a month away. With a camera watching the threshold, the alert goes out within minutes, with the picture, and somebody goes to close it. It is the easiest of the eight to put right and the one that takes longest to discover.

What people usually ask

Isn't a door contact enough?

A contact tells you the leaf is not where it should be; it does not tell you whether it is ajar, whether anyone is standing in front of it or whether the maintenance team opened it. The camera raises the alert with the picture, and whoever gets it decides in two seconds from what they see. It also covers what a contact does not: a gate that never quite latched, or a leaf that swings open on its own in the wind.

Does IRIS identify the people walking past?

No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not read number plates, it does not compare against any database and it does not store who anyone is. It counts that people have walked past the opening, because that number says how urgent the alert is, and nothing more. Who they were is not known and not wanted.

What if the gate is open because there is work going on inside?

The site can switch the rule off while scheduled work is under way, or raise the number of minutes before an alert. That is the operator's call. What does not change is the ending: when the team leaves, if the leaf is still open, the alert goes out.

The real interface, step by step

Everything comes in. Only what matters gets through.

This sums up what IRIS does with one alert, from the moment it appears until it is closed. The real screen holds far more; this is the main thread.

And the best part

Nobody was hired to stare at a screen. They were hired to know what to do.

Watching is what a machine does best; deciding is what only a person does. IRIS watches all four thousand at once and hands over only what calls for a decision.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
