Someone climbing the substation fence
A substation at the edge of the road, seen from a lamp post on the pavement. Someone in a dark jacket has stepped up onto the low wall and is holding on to the mesh, about to go over. Inside there is nobody: the transformer, the control house and the closed gate. Here you don't have to decide how many people are too many. One person inside the fence is already the incident.

What IRIS understands
What it recognises in this scene
- person on the fence
- mesh fence
- power transformer
- main gate
- control house
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 22 sOn the fence for
- 1People on the fence
- 0People inside the compound
- 0People authorised right now
- 0Vehicles on the street
- 19:40Time of the alert
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
somebody climbs the fence or crosses into the compound, at any hour
Then
- alert the control room with the camera, the time and the video of the moment
- switch on the compound lighting and call the on-call team
- keep the sequence for the report and for whoever goes out to check
The instruction that set it up«Tell me the moment somebody touches the fence or gets over it, at any hour. Nobody is supposed to be in here.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the site
A substation has nobody in front of it. Weeks can go by between visits, and what happened inside is found out when somebody goes to look: the forced door, the cut cable, the machine tripped. Here the alert goes out while the person is still on the fence. IRIS closes nothing and sends nobody, but the person on call decides with the picture in front of them whether the team goes out tonight or it waits until morning. And the rule is the easiest on this whole site to write, because here there should never be anyone at all.
What people usually ask
What if it is a technician arriving for an inspection?
IRIS raises the alert anyway, and that is how it should be: it does not know who the person is and does not need to. The alert arrives with the picture, and whoever receives it sees in a second that a visit was booked and closes it. The site can also switch the rule off during scheduled work windows. The criteria are set by the operator; IRIS applies what it has been told.
Does IRIS recognise who the person on the fence is?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not read number plates, it does not compare against any database and it does not store who anyone is. It sees that there is a person where there should not be one, and at a site that is empty by definition that is all you need to know.
Does it work at night?
It depends on the camera that is installed, not on IRIS. With a camera that gives a usable picture at night — with its own lighting or a thermal sensor — the rule is the same and so is the alert. If the camera cannot see, neither can IRIS: we do not invent what is not in the picture.
A different case every time
Everything comes in. Only what matters gets through.
This sums up what IRIS does with one alert, from the moment it appears until it is closed. The real screen holds far more; this is the main thread.
- The rule gets built
- It goes to every camera
- Published, it watches alone
- And then it fires
Next step
The hospital
How long before somebody comes down that corridor at four in the morning?
13 cases: 12 raise an alert when something happens and 1 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
The school
Who sees the child who has fallen at the far end of the playground?
13 cases: 12 raise an alert when something happens and 1 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
At four in the morning, the camera is still watching just as it does at noon.
No heavy eyelids, no distractions, no shift change. What happens at night is understood at night, not the next morning.
