Lighting a fire on the sand is banned almost everywhere, and the problem is not the picture of the bonfire: it is what is left behind. Embers buried in the sand that a barefoot child steps on the next day, broken glass, a gust of wind with a parasol a few steps away. Today the warden sees this if he happens to walk past, and a beach is long. IRIS sees a source of heat and smoke on the sand and reports it while it is happening, with the camera, the stretch and the time. It does not know whether this is a permitted barbecue, a party bonfire or a fire that has got out of hand, and it is not going to claim otherwise: it alerts so that someone can go and look. The one who decides and acts is a person.

Does IRIS know whether that fire is allowed?
No. IRIS sees a source of heat and smoke on the sand, and that is where its knowledge ends. It cannot tell a permitted barbecue from a party bonfire or from a fire that has got out of hand. What it does is alert someone to go and look, with the camera, the stretch of sand and the time. Which stretches have a rule and at what hours is decided by the beach service, not by us.
Does IRIS know who lit the fire?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: not the bathers, not the person who lights the fire. It does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it does not follow a particular person. What it detects is a situation — there is a fire on the sand — and what it hands over is the place, the time and the video. It cannot be used to penalise anyone: that is for whoever turns up and for the authority in charge.
Does this prevent a fire?
No, and we are not going to claim it does. IRIS puts out nothing, calls nobody on its own account and promises nothing about what will or will not happen. All it does is let someone find out while it is happening, instead of finding out the next day from what was left in the sand. What you gain is time; what is done with that time is decided by a person.
