Here it pays to be exact, because we are talking about somebody’s job. A dealer deals, pays and takes hundreds of times a shift, fast, on his feet, with people talking at him. A chip that ends up on another square can be a perfectly correct payout that the camera sees from a bad angle. That is why IRIS does not say there is an error. IRIS marks a sequence that gets reviewed: the table, the time, the duration and the video. The conclusion belongs to compliance and to nobody else. Detecting is not deciding. And it works both ways: that same saved sequence is what backs a dealer up when a guest accuses him for no reason. What the house gains is not a culprit. Is this a way of keeping watch on staff?
No, and it is not built for that. What is measured is the table’s procedure, not the person carrying it out. IRIS identifies nobody, recognises no faces, scores nobody and measures nobody’s performance. And here is something that rarely gets said: this protects the dealer as much as the house. When a guest accuses a member of staff for no reason, that same saved sequence is what backs the member of staff up. A procedure that is checked the same way every time is a defence, not surveillance.
What exactly does the camera see?
Hands, chips and cards on the cloth, and the order in which they move. Nothing else. It does not read the value of a chip, it does not see face-down cards, it does not know how much was staked and it does not know how much was paid. That is why it marks and does not conclude: with what it sees you cannot decide whether a round was settled correctly, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling smoke. What it can do, and does very well, is find the instant among eight hours of recording and put it in front of the person who can decide.
