What changes for operations, for the passenger and for maintenance
Every airport has a written procedure for an unattended bag, and that procedure starts when somebody notices. That is where the minutes are lost: today somebody sees it in passing, or does not. With IRIS, the count starts at the second the bag is left alone, and whoever is on duty can rewind the video to that moment and see what happened, without searching through hours of recording. Almost always it is resolved in a minute and without bothering anybody: somebody left it two steps away and comes back. And when it is not, you have gained the one resource you cannot get back, which is time.

Does IRIS say that bag is dangerous?
No, and it cannot. IRIS states a measured fact: there is a bag on the floor, it has been there for six minutes and forty seconds and nobody has come within two metres. It does not judge, infer or label. What that means is decided by the airport's procedure and applied by a person, who also has the video from the second it started. The camera shortens the time until somebody knows. It does not replace the person who decides.
And what if the owner is three metres away, with their back turned?
Then the alert fires and is closed in ten seconds, because whoever receives it opens the video and sees it. The two numbers in the sentence — the minutes and the metres — are changed by writing them: if two metres is too tight in a particular concourse, you put three and try it. Nothing has to be reprogrammed. And an alert that closes quickly bothers nobody: what really causes trouble is finding out half an hour late.
Is the owner searched for with facial recognition?
No. IRIS does not recognise faces, holds no database of people and matches against no list. What it does is open the video at the exact second the bag was left alone, so that a person can see what happened without searching through hours of recording. It is the same thing that is done today with ordinary video, but without losing twenty minutes finding the moment. The person watching is a person, and the person who concludes is that person.
