Be careful what this camera promises, because somebody's life is on the line. IRIS does NOT verify that the equipment is dead. That is what the lockout procedure and the test for absence of voltage do, with the site's own instruments, and no picture replaces them. What the camera adds is a question asked in time: there is an open cabinet and no lockout or signage in sight. Somebody calls and confirms it before, not after.

Does IRIS verify that the equipment is dead?
No. Flatly no, and this has to be clear. Whether a piece of equipment is dead is established by the lockout procedure and confirmed by the test for absence of voltage with the proper instruments. A camera cannot do that, and IRIS does not claim to. What IRIS sees is that a cabinet is open and there is no lockout in sight. It is a prompt to ask, never a permit to work.
What if the lockout is in place but out of frame?
Then the alert goes out when it did not need to, and that is by design. The rule is deliberately cautious: if the lockout or the card cannot be seen, it raises the alert. Whoever gets it closes it in seconds with a phone call. With live equipment involved, we would rather ask one question too many than stay quiet one time too few.
Is this a way of keeping tabs on the workers?
That is not what it is for, and it is worth agreeing on beforehand with the people who work there and their representatives. IRIS does not identify anyone and does not measure anyone's output: it detects a risky situation in front of an open cabinet. What gets reported, to whom and in which hours is written by the company, not by IRIS.
