The bushings are not the way they always were
An ordinary morning at the substation. No fire, nobody inside, vegetation under control. The only thing that has changed sits on top of the transformer: one of the bushings looks blackened and slightly tilted, and the connection reaching it has lost the straight line it used to have. The insulators in the bay next door are exactly as they were on day one. IRIS sees it because it compares this image with hundreds of the same framing.

What IRIS understands
What it recognises in this scene
- bushing blackened and tilted
- power transformer
- insulators in the bay, unchanged
- switchgear cabinets
- incoming line gantry
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 2Parts changed against the history
- 14Parts unchanged
- 180Days comparing the same framing
- 0People who have entered the enclosure
- 11:20Time of the comparison
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
an insulator or a bushing changes appearance compared with the history of the same framing
Then
- alert maintenance with today’s image and the reference image, side by side
- keep the series of images of the same point in case the change grows
- mark the part that has changed and the ones that are unchanged
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if any insulator or bushing looks different from how it was, even if nothing else happens.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
A bushing that gets dirty, chars or tilts makes no noise: it fails months later, all at once, and takes the transformer with it. The walk-round inspection comes once a year, and at that height with the sun in your eyes that detail is invisible. The camera looks every day from the same spot and flags the change while it is still cheap: a clean, a re-torque or a planned part swap instead of a breakdown.
What people usually ask
How does a camera see that an insulator is damaged?
By comparing. The camera is fixed and always looks at the same framing, so it holds hundreds of images of the same bushing at the same hour and in the same light. When a part blackens, tilts or fills with grime, that difference stands out. A person who visits the site once a year has nothing to compare with; the camera does.
Does it replace thermography or the electrical inspection?
No. The camera sees the outside condition: colour, tilt, grime, a missing part. What happens inside the porcelain or the windings is answered by electrical tests, oil analysis and thermography. With a thermal camera it also reads the heat that shows on the outside. IRIS is there to decide which piece of equipment to go and look at first.
And what if the change is only dirt or a shadow?
It may well be, which is why the alert arrives with both images. Whoever receives it sees today’s picture and the reference picture side by side and decides in seconds whether it is dust, a shadow from the sun or something worth a visit. IRIS does not decide what counts as a fault: it shows the change, and a person applies the judgement.

Retail
Who sees the sales that never reach the till?
10 cases: 4 raise an alert when something happens and 6 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
The building site
Who is watching when the load swings over somebody?
11 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 2 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
The disk fills up on its own.The questions stay unanswered.
Storing images is easy, and it is not cheap. What was missing was someone to look at them. IRIS looks at everything you record and shows you only what is worth a glance.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
