The plant manager sees the blockage when it starts, not when the pile reaches the roadway. They get the camera, the time of the first smoke and the video, and they can stop the feed and send the loader before the ember catches the rest. A spill cleared in an hour costs what it costs; the same spill burning at four in the morning is another matter entirely. The footage also feeds the report and the conveyor inspection.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS detect fire sooner than a temperature sensor?
It depends on where the fire is. On an open pile the camera sees the smoke and the ember as soon as they appear, and that is usually before the heat reaches a sensor placed a few metres away. Inside a closed piece of equipment, no: there the detector rules. IRIS works alongside the fire system, never instead of it.
Does a very dusty day set off alerts that are not real?
It should not. IRIS tells smoke apart by how it moves and how it grows, not by colour alone, and dust from a discharge behaves differently. Even so, the plant tunes the rule: which area is watched, what size counts and how many seconds it has to last. What counts as an alert is decided by the plant, not by the camera.
Can IRIS stop the conveyor?
No. IRIS alerts; it does not act on any machine. The order to stop comes from a person or from the plant control system. What the camera contributes is the image, the exact time and the video: to decide fast and to justify it afterwards.
