In a storm, the control room gets a lot of signals at once and none of them says what fell or where. The camera shows the whole site at a glance: where the tree came in, what equipment it hit and which part of the perimeter is now open. The crew leaves with the right tools and knowing the enclosure is no longer closed. And the video of the moment is kept for the report and for the insurer.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS raise an alert when a tree falls onto the site?

Yes. The camera sees the movement and sees that the scene has changed: where there was gravel and equipment, there is now a trunk. IRIS alerts straight away with the camera, the time of the impact and the video of the seconds before. It also shows the same image from the day before, for comparison. The control room then knows what fell and where before sending anyone out.

Can it tell whether the equipment has been damaged?

Not fully. The camera shows what can be seen: where the trunk is resting, which insulators are now covered and which part of the fencing is open. Whether a piece of equipment is damaged inside is answered by the protection relays, the electrical measurements and the field inspection. IRIS provides the image and the exact minute so that inspection starts in the right place.

And what if the enclosure is left open by the broken fence?

That is the second alert. When the crown brings down a section of fencing, the enclosure is no longer closed and anyone can walk in. The same camera watches that gap: if someone crosses it, it raises an alert with the time and the video. IRIS sees that a person has entered where nobody should be; it does not identify anyone and does not try to.
