Can a camera measure the wall thickness of a pipe?
No. Wall thickness is measured by ultrasonic inspection, and a technician does that with their own kit. A camera sees the outside: cladding come loose, insulation torn open, rust running down, a support out of shape, sheets on the floor. That alone is reason enough to go and measure. IRIS says where to look; the thickness comes from the ultrasound.
What good is the camera then, if it does not measure?
It is for comparing. The same camera, the same framing, six months on. Put the two images side by side and you can see whether the cladding loss has grown, whether more sheets have come down, whether the stain has run further along the support. That dated before-and-after is what puts the inspection list in order.
Does it detect corrosion under insulation?
Not while the insulation is intact: if it is covered, it cannot be seen. What it does pick up are the outward signs of that problem — an open joint, a lifted sheet, a stain running down the pipe, water weeping from a lap. Those are the points where the inspection starts. The confirmation always comes from the test, not from the image.
