Four in the afternoon in the staging aisle. In the middle of the aisle stands a pallet stacked far above head height. A pallet that falls gives no warning. It falls on whoever is passing, or on a forklift, and the report afterwards always says the same thing: it was badly stacked from the start. With the camera the alert arrives while the pallet is still standing, with the image of the lean and the exact minute. Restacking it takes five minutes, and it happens before anybody walks underneath.

Does IRIS know whether the pallet is going to fall?
No, and it does not claim to. IRIS does not predict: it sees what is happening now. It sees that the stack leans, that boxes overhang the pallet and that the film hangs loose, and it warns with the image. Whether it falls is up to physics; what the camera does is get somebody to look at it before walking underneath.
Can it measure the weight or how the load is distributed?
No. A camera sees shape: how far the stack leans, which boxes overhang, the loose film and how many layers there are. Weight comes from the scale, and how the load is distributed is known by whoever built it. The image is enough to stop that pallet before it moves.
And if the pallet is well stacked but very tall?
It depends on the rule the warehouse writes. IRIS does not decide what height is too much: the maximum height, the lean that is tolerated and which aisles are watched are set by the site. The camera counts the box layers and measures the lean it sees; the threshold is set by a person.
