No. The camera sees the smoke, the flames and the people leaving. With a thermal camera it also reads the heat on the outside surface. What is happening inside the cell is told by the battery’s own management system, and the cause by whoever opens it afterwards. IRIS contributes the picture and the minute it started.
Is this any use where there are already fire detectors?
Yes, and it works alongside them. A ceiling detector needs the smoke to rise and reach it; a tall building with open doors delays that. The camera sees the column right where it starts and adds what a detector cannot give: the picture of the spot and the video of what came before.
Can it mistake steam or dust for smoke?
It can, and that is why the site writes the rule. It is tuned to the charging bay, to the hours when there should be no vapour there, and to a minimum duration before it alerts. When an alert turns out to be nothing, it gets marked and the rule is tightened. No system is right every time and we are not going to claim otherwise.
