CAM-274

Pallets in front of the emergency exit

Early afternoon at the end of aisle 8. Somebody has left four pallets of boxes right against the emergency door: they cover half the leaf, the extinguisher and the fire hose cabinet. The green exit sign is still lit above, pointing at a door that cannot be opened. An orange forklift manoeuvres alongside and a worker walks past. IRIS sees goods standing inside the zone that must always be kept clear.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • pallets inside the clear zone
  • emergency door blocked
  • exit sign lit above the door
  • extinguisher hidden behind the load
  • fire hose cabinet
  • forklift manoeuvring alongside

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 13:05Time of the alert
  • 2 h 15 minTime the exit has been blocked
  • 4Pallets inside the clear zone
  • 2Firefighting equipment covered
  • 5Times this exit was blocked this week

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

goods stand inside the exit clear zone for more than five minutes

Then

  1. alert the safety officer with the camera, the aisle and the time
  2. save the picture of the moment the goods were left there
  3. time the blockage until the zone is clear again
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when there are goods in front of the emergency exit or covering the extinguisher for more than five minutes.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Nobody puts it there on purpose: it is left «for a minute» and stays three days. The trouble is that it only comes to light at the audit, or on the day of the fire. With a zone drawn in front of the exit, IRIS raises the alert when something has been there longer than allowed, and times how long. The safety officer goes from one annual photograph to knowing which exits get blocked, at what time of day and how many times a week.

What people usually ask

Does it alert the moment somebody leaves a pallet there?

Only if the warehouse wants it that way. The plant writes the threshold: it can be immediate, five minutes or half an hour. Leaving a pallet for thirty seconds to open a door is normal; leaving it three days is not. IRIS times from the first second and alerts when the set time is passed. The rule is decided by the plant, not by the camera: IRIS does not write what counts as an alert.

Does it work for traffic aisles too, not just exits?

Yes. It is the same drawn zone, put somewhere else: a forklift aisle, the access to an electrical panel, the space in front of a hose cabinet or the whole evacuation route. You trace the outline over the image and say how long something may stay inside it. What changes from one case to the next is the outline and the minute, not the system and not the camera.

Does it know who left the pallets there?

No. IRIS does not identify anybody and does not recognise faces: it sees «there are goods in the zone that must be kept clear», not who put them there. What it delivers is the time they appeared, the picture of that moment and how long they have been there. With that the warehouse knows which shift and which operation it was, and can fix the procedure. The point is a clear exit, not finding somebody to blame.

Demo · IRIS at work

A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.

An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.

  1. You draw the line
  2. It counts by itself
  3. A number comes out

And the best part

You already record. The hard part was always watching it.

Years of video that only get opened once something has gone wrong. IRIS understands those same images as they arrive, so the answer no longer lives only in the archive.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
