A fire in a waste pile is the number one case in the sector, and it grows fast: what the loader can open up at two minutes is a whole shed at twenty. And it nearly always starts at night, with the plant empty and nobody watching, so today it gets found when the smoke is already visible from outside and somebody phones in. IRIS watches the pile around the clock and alerts the plant manager with the camera and the spot while the smoke is still a thin column. It puts nothing out and it replaces neither the detection nor the suppression the plant already has: the only thing it brings forward is the moment a person finds out, and in a pile fire that moment is everything.

Does IRIS detect the fire by temperature?
It depends on the camera, and IRIS works with whatever is already installed. With a normal camera it sees what is visible: smoke, flame, a glow at night. There is no temperature in that image because there is none to read, and even so the alert arrives long before somebody outside phones in. If the plant has thermal cameras, IRIS watches those the same way, and there the temperature is the image: a pile fire starts inside, and by the time smoke shows it has been going for hours. A thermal camera marks the hot spot before anything surfaces, which is exactly when the loader can still open the pile up. No system change is needed for that: it uses the camera that is already there.
Does it replace the plant's own detection and suppression?
No, and it should not be sold that way. The plant has its own detection and its own suppression, and that stays exactly as it is and stays in charge. IRIS is something else: a pair of eyes on the pile that never tire and that alert a person with the camera, the spot and the video of the moment. Nor does it trigger anything: it actuates nothing, discharges nothing and sends nobody anywhere. The two live side by side, and what puts the fire out is still what always did.
Does IRIS identify the trucks or the workers in the picture?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces and it does not read number plates. It sees that there is a person out in the yard and a machine beside the pile, and that is enough to describe what is happening. Who that person is and whose truck that is, it neither knows nor stores.
