No helmet in the plant walkway

The technical walkway of a treatment plant, between the aeration basin and the tanks. A man in a shirt is coming down the path towards the camera, with no helmet and no hi-vis. At the far end of the same walkway three workers stand by the handrail in vests and helmets, and on the right another operator in a white helmet is working on the pumps. The basin is aerating right beside the path.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • person without PPE
  • workers wearing PPE
  • operator at the pumps
  • technical walkway
  • aeration basin

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 5People in the frame
  • 4Wearing helmet and vest
  • 1Without helmet or vest
  • 40 sIn the area for
  • 3Alerts here today

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

someone is inside the marked area without a helmet or without a vest and is still there seconds later

Then

  1. alert the plant manager with the camera and the exact point on the walkway
  2. keep the still, so it can be shown at the safety briefing
  3. log how many times it has happened at that same spot today
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if anyone walks into the technical area without a helmet and a hi-vis vest, whether they work here or not.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the site

The person without a helmet is almost never a plant operator: it is the driver who parked and came in to ask something, the supplier's technician who came to look at a pump, the visitor who walked two metres ahead. And that walkway has an aerating basin a step from the edge. Today this gets corrected if someone sees it, and at four on a Tuesday afternoon nobody does. IRIS does not stop anyone and does not hand out helmets: it alerts the person who can walk over and hand one, while the visitor is still there. And because it logs how often it happens and where, the plant manager discovers it is almost always the same gate.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know who the person without a helmet is?

No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not read number plates, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. It sees a person in an area where a helmet and a vest are required, and sees that they are not wearing them. That is enough for someone to go and hand them over, and for that you do not need a name.

What if it is a visitor being escorted by plant staff?

Escorted or not, that area requires a helmet. The rule is written by the plant: you mark on the image where the mandatory-PPE zone starts and in which time bands it applies, and the offices and the car park stay outside it. If the plant decides an escorted visit should not raise an alert, it is set up that way; the decision is theirs, not ours.

Is this for disciplining people?

It is not designed for that, and the way it works it could not serve that anyway: IRIS does not know who the person is. The alert goes to whoever can walk over with a helmet in hand, and what gets logged is the spot and the time, not a name. What the site does with that information afterwards is decided by the operator of the plant, who writes the rules.

Demo · IRIS at work

You set the rule once. IRIS applies it every time.

You will see a summary of the interface, played step by step and hands-free. Each round starts with another case. The complete tool does not fit in a demo.

  1. The rule gets built
  2. It goes to every camera
  3. Published, it watches alone
  4. And then it fires

And the best part

If the camera does not show it,IRIS does not see it. We say so up front, not afterwards.

No camera sees through a wall or in complete darkness. We would rather show you where the limit is, and place what you have well, than promise something that never appears on screen.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
