Then

  1. alert the operator on duty with the camera and the video of the gate
  2. log the time it was opened and whether the compound is still open
  3. keep the alert open until somebody confirms the gate is shut

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the site

That compound is fenced for a reason: there are storage tanks and a dosing room inside, and walking in without knowing what is there is dangerous for whoever walks in. At a quarter to eight in the evening on an ordinary day nobody is scheduled there, and the gate has just opened. IRIS does not say who that person is or what they came for, and it will not hint at it: it could be an operator who swapped shifts with a colleague, a driver who took the wrong gate, or someone who should not be there. All the camera says is that the gate is open at an hour with nothing scheduled, and what that means is decided by a person, looking at the video.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS decide whether that person is allowed in?

No, and it cannot. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not read number plates, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. Nor does it judge what anyone came for. All it sees is a gate leaf opening in a time band where the plant had scheduled no work. Who may enter and when is written by the operator of the plant, and it is a person who looks at the image and decides what to do.

What if it is an operator doing his job?

Then nothing should fire, and normally nothing does. The rule is written around the plant's time bands and planned work: if dosing is scheduled at that hour, that entry is normal and raises nothing. When it does fire and it was work, whoever gets it closes it in a second and it stays logged. An alert that fires every time somebody does their job stops being read within a week, and then it is no use on the day it matters.

Do you need a sensor on the gate?

No. The camera is already looking at that gate. You mark the fence on the image and what gets checked is whether the leaf is in place or not. And there is something a contact switch cannot give you: the video of the moment it opened, which is what lets you understand what happened without reconstructing it from memory the next morning.
