A gate that is not seated in its frame
The face of the dam seen from the crest. In the middle bay, a sluice gate leaf has come to rest at an angle inside its frame, its bottom edge off its guide, and water is coming through the gap. The gate in the bay next door and the one above it in the same bay are seated in place, and serve as the comparison. Up top, a technician leaning on the handrail is looking down at it from the crest.

What IRIS understands
What it recognises in this scene
- gate out of its frame
- gate seated in place
- gate in the next bay
- technician on the crest
- water through the gap
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 26 minOut of frame for
- 1 / 5Gates out of position

The series, not one figure
One number says nothing. A curve does.

The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
a gate leaf appears in the picture out of its frame or out of line with the ones beside it
Then
- alert the operations manager with the camera, the bay and the video of the movement
- keep the frame before and the frame after, so the change of position can be seen
- log the change of position in the day's series, with its time
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when a gate is not where it should be in its frame, and show me the movements it has made this week.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the site
This is the other one that is not about security. Knowing that a gate is not where it should be is what decides whether you operate it, send someone or take the bay out of service, and today you learn it when somebody drives up and looks. At a dam, driving up and looking can be half a morning. With IRIS the position of the leaf is checked on its own, all the time, and the alert comes with the frame before and the frame after. And the limit, spelled out: IRIS sees the position of the gate in the picture, it does not read any remote control system, it does not know what command was given and it does not replace the dam's instrumentation. It is a visual check, and that is precisely why it is independent: if the control system says one thing and the picture says another, that is exactly what you need to know.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know whether the gate has failed or was moved on purpose?
No, and it does not claim to. IRIS sees the position of the gate in the picture: where the leaf is relative to its frame and to the ones beside it. It does not read any remote control system, it does not know what command was sent from the control room and it does not replace the dam's instrumentation. What it does is let somebody find out now that the leaf is not where it was, and whoever knows the site decides whether that is normal or not.
And if the camera gets wet, the sun dazzles it or there is fog?
Then the reading is worth less, and that has to be said. Everything IRIS understands here comes from the picture: if the picture is not there, there is no reading, and the system says so instead of inventing one. That is why this is one more check and not the only one. What you can do is choose the camera position and the framing carefully before anything is installed, which is where almost everything is won.
Does it identify the technician who appears in the picture?
No. IRIS identifies nobody: it does not recognise faces, it does not read number plates, it compares nothing against any database and it does not store who anyone is. It counts that there is one person on the crest, which is a useful fact — if somebody is near the bay, the operation is decided differently — and nothing more.
A different case every time
Watch what happens. Then watch what IRIS does with it.
Not a recorded video and not a drawing: it is a summary of the real tool, with a different case each time round. The whole tool does not fit in a box.

Ports
Who is watching a whole quay at three in the morning?
14 cases: 13 raise an alert when something happens and 1 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Banking
Who is watching the cameras of a whole branch network?
13 cases: 12 raise an alert when something happens and 1 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
Counting is not watching over anyone. It is knowing how many went through, and when.
It is what lets you compare: two Tuesdays, two doors, two seasons. Because it is measured the same way every day, the comparison stands on its own.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
We reply the same working day.
