What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the site

Eight thirty in the morning, and a technician is leaning on the rail looking down at the center bay from the crest. The leaf has been sitting there at an angle all night and nobody knew: at a dam, driving up to look at a gate can be half a morning, and until somebody does, the bay stays as it is. With IRIS the position of the leaf is checked on its own, all the time, and the alert comes with the frame before and the frame after. And the limit, spelled out: IRIS sees the position of the gate in the picture, it doesn’t read any remote control system, it doesn’t know what command was given and it doesn’t replace the dam’s instrumentation. That’s why it’s independent: if the control system says one thing and the picture says another, that’s what you need to know.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know whether the gate has failed or was moved on purpose?

No, and it doesn’t claim to. IRIS sees the position of the gate in the picture: where the leaf is relative to its frame and to the ones beside it. It doesn’t read any remote control system, it doesn’t know what command was sent from the control room and it doesn’t replace the dam’s instrumentation. What it does is let somebody find out now that the leaf isn’t where it was, and whoever knows the site decides whether that’s normal or not.

And if the camera gets wet, the sun dazzles it or there’s fog?

Then the reading is worth less, and that has to be said. Everything IRIS understands here comes from the picture: if the picture isn’t there, there’s no reading, and the system says so instead of inventing one. That’s why this is one more check and not the only one. What you can do is choose the camera position and the framing carefully before anything is installed, which is where almost everything is won.

Does it identify the technician who appears in the picture?

No. IRIS identifies nobody: it does not recognize faces, it does not read license plates, it compares nothing against any database and it does not store who anyone is. It counts that there’s one person on the crest, which is a useful fact — if somebody is near the bay, the operation is decided differently — and nothing more.
