Logs piling up against the spillway

Second day of rain, six in the evening. Timber comes down with the water, arrives all at once and stops wherever it finds a screen; from then on the bay stops discharging and the water looks for somewhere else. Today the operations manager finds out when he looks at the level, sees it isn’t dropping as it should and has to send someone up with the event already under way. With IRIS the alert goes out while the raft is forming, with the bay and the time, and with that you decide whether to operate another bay, send someone or wait. IRIS clears nothing and promises no bay will stay clear: it warns that one is closing up.
What people usually ask
Isn’t it enough to watch the discharge?
Discharge tells you something is wrong once it already is. A build-up forms before it shows in the level, and the gap between the two is exactly the margin you need to decide anything. Discharge also doesn’t tell you where: it tells you less is coming out than should. The picture tells you which bay and what with. Those are two different pieces of information, and the second is the one you take to a gate operation.
How does it tell a log from foam or a reflection?
Because the rule isn’t about a single object, it’s about a build-up that stays. Foam goes past, a shadow moves with the sun, and a lone log floats down and carries on. What’s detected is material that arrives, stops against the screen and is still there after the time the operator sets, and that time is their parameter, not ours. Even so, it’s a reading taken from the picture: if the screen isn’t visible, IRIS can’t say what’s behind it, and it says so rather than making it up.
Does IRIS know whether anyone is working down there?
It sees whether there are people in frame and counts them, and that’s all. It identifies nobody: it does not recognize faces, it does not read license plates, it compares nothing against any database and it does not store who anyone is. On this camera that figure is good for one thing only: knowing whether the site is empty or whether there’s somebody nearby to warn before operating a bay.
