What changes for whoever answers for the site
Twenty past three in the morning and there’s nobody at the dam. The operations manager is forty minutes away by car, and what decides whether he gets up and whether a gate is moved is a number: how much water is over the crest and how fast it’s rising. Thirty inches is alarming or not depending on what it read six hours ago. Without that reading, the event is discovered from the next day’s damage. With IRIS the level reads itself, including where there’s no instrumentation and at the hour when nobody is there. And the limit, spelled out: this is a reading against a visible physical reference — the threshold of the hut door — not a water-level gauge, and it doesn’t replace the dam’s instrumentation.
