Snow and closed drums in the basket, still hanging over the furnace

Quarter to six in the morning, charging bay. The basket hangs from the crane over the open furnace, the scrap already above the glowing bath. In the load there are three closed drums — one red, one green, one blue lying on its side — and patches of unmelted snow. Two streams of water are running out of the bottom of the basket. It has not tipped yet. The four operators are on the pulpit platform, watching. That “not yet” is the whole point.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • closed drums in the load
  • unmelted snow on the scrap
  • water running out of the basket floor
  • charging basket hanging
  • furnace mouth open
  • operators on the pulpit platform

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 3Closed drums in the basket
  • 2Streams of water running out
  • 1 min 20 sTime hanging over the furnace
  • 4People on the platform
  • 05:47Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the basket shows snow, ice, dripping water or a closed container, and it has not tipped yet

Then

  1. alert the crane driver and the pulpit before the basket tips
  2. save the picture of the basket and the video from the scrap yard onwards
  3. add the rejected load to the shift record
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if there is snow, ice or a closed drum in the basket, and tell me before the crane takes it over the furnace.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Water trapped under molten metal turns to steam all at once, and that is an explosion. A closed drum does the same. Once the basket has tipped, there is nothing left to decide. That is why this camera looks earlier: while the basket is hanging, the crane can still set it back down and somebody can pull the drums out by hand. The alert does not arrive to explain what happened; it arrives so that it does not happen. And it records which load it was.

What people usually ask

Does the alert arrive before the basket tips?

Yes, and that is the whole reason for this camera. The load is visible from the moment the basket is filled in the yard and all the way while the crane carries it over the furnace. Along that trip the snow, the ice and the closed drums are in plain sight. The alert goes out as soon as they are seen, with a picture of the basket, and there is still time to set it back down. After it tips there is no decision left to take.

Can a camera tell whether the scrap is wet inside?

Not entirely, and that should be said plainly. It sees the water that can be seen: snow on top, ice, streams running out of the basket floor, puddles underneath. Moisture hidden inside a pressed bale does not show. So this camera does not replace the scrap yard controls or the drying procedure: it stands in front of them and catches what is in plain sight, which in winter is nearly always what there is.

Can IRIS stop the charge from going in?

No. IRIS does not command the crane. It alerts the crane driver and the pulpit, saves the picture of the basket and the video from the yard onwards, and logs the load. Lowering the basket, moving it aside or emptying it is decided by a person. What gets rejected and what gets accepted is also written by the plant: IRIS applies the rule, it does not invent it. What it adds is the alert in time and the proof that it was there to be seen.

And the best part

Recording is memory.Understanding is attention, and that is the part you had never bought.

The recording is still kept in case you need it. What is added is that those same images are understood as they arrive, not months later and not by hand.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
