Two coils out of the rack, and the chocks lying on the floor

Mid-afternoon in the coil yard. In front of the rack, two coils are out of place: one resting on its edge against a wooden chock that has tipped over, the other straight on the concrete with no cradle. Loose chocks and battens are scattered on the floor around them. A worker in a white helmet and hi-vis vest has stopped to look. Behind the yellow railing, the rest of the coils are still lined up on their cradles. A forklift goes past with another coil.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • coils outside the rack
  • loose wooden chocks
  • rack with the coils properly chocked
  • worker next to the coils
  • forklift moving another coil

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 2Coils outside the rack
  • 5Loose chocks on the floor
  • 15Coils chocked in the rack
  • 26 minTime since the first one was seen out
  • 15:40Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a coil appears outside the rack, unchocked or resting straight on the floor

Then

  1. alert the yard manager with the camera, the time and the picture
  2. save the video from the moment the coil was seen outside the rack
  3. add the coil to the report of storage outside the allowed set-up
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if any coil turns up outside the rack, unchocked or resting on the floor.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A coil out of its cradle does not warn you: it shifts a few centimetres a day until it rolls. The yard manager cannot walk the whole place every hour. With the camera, the alert goes out the same day the coil turns up outside the rack, with the picture and the exact spot. And at the end of the month there is a list of how often it happened and in which aisle, which is what you need to decide whether there are too many coils or too few cradles.

What people usually ask

Can a camera tell whether a coil is about to fall?

No. IRIS does not predict. It sees what is in front of it: a coil outside the rack, unchocked or resting on the floor, with loose chocks around it. That is already outside the set-up the plant has defined, and that is why it alerts. Whether that coil will end up rolling, the camera does not say, and nobody should expect it to.

What if the coil is only on the floor for a moment while it is being handled?

It depends on the rule the plant writes. You can ask it to alert only if the coil has been there more than a few minutes, or only outside the handling areas, or only on certain shifts. IRIS does not decide what counts as an alert: it applies what the yard asks for. That is why the same view works for a strict plant and for one that only wants the end-of-shift count.

Can the same camera also count the stock in the yard?

Yes, and it is usually the part that gets used most. The same image serves two different purposes, and they are not set up the same way: asking is for finding, counting is for measuring. The alert is set up by speaking, in one sentence. The count is set up by drawing the zone on the image, because you cannot describe a line in words, you have to draw it. That is why the number comes out repeatable and can be audited.

Demo · IRIS at work

You set the rule once. IRIS applies it every time.

You will see a summary of the interface, played step by step and hands-free. Each round starts with another case. The complete tool does not fit in a demo.

  1. Four cameras at once
  2. Each understands its own view
  3. The numbers climb by themselves

And the best part

There are nights of thick fogwhen the image gives you nothing. We do not dress that up.

Backlight, heavy rain, a street lamp that has blown. IRIS works with what the camera puts in front of it; when there is no image, it says so instead of inventing an answer.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
