An open crack running the length of the slab
Mid-morning at the inspection table. A freshly rolled slab stands still under the lamp, and an open crack runs the length of its top face, edges lifted and already rusted. Two inspectors look at it from the walkway on the right; one is holding a tablet. The rollers are still underneath. IRIS sees the mark, places it on the slab and measures it against the slab itself.

What IRIS understands
What it recognises in this scene
- open crack on the top face
- slab stopped under the lamp
- roller table at a standstill
- inspectors with a tablet on the walkway
- inspection lamp above the slab
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 2,4 mLength of the crack across the slab
- 18Slabs checked this shift
- 3Slabs set aside today
- 2People in shot
- 10:05Time of the inspection
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
a crack, a fold or an out-of-pattern mark appears on the top face of the slab
Then
- alert quality with the camera, the time and the place on the slab
- save the picture with the mark drawn on it and the length measured against the slab
- count how many slabs have been set aside this shift
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a slab leaves the table with a crack or a fold on its top face, and save me the picture with the length.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
A defect that slips through carries on: it gets cut, moved, and sometimes reaches the customer before anybody sees it. Visual inspection depends on who is on shift and on how the light falls. A camera looks at every slab the same way and with the same criteria, marks where the mark is and saves the picture with the time. Whether the slab is ground or set aside is still quality’s call.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS decide whether the slab is rejected?
No. IRIS sees the mark, says where it is and measures it against the slab itself, whose dimensions are known. Whether that is a rejection, a grinding job or a defect that gets accepted is decided by the steelworks’ quality criteria, and they are the ones who write the rule. The system supplies the picture, the time and the exact place so the decision is taken with the piece in front of you.
Does it also see cracks inside the slab?
No. A camera sees surface: what is on the top face and catches the light. An internal defect, an inclusion or a crack under the skin do not show in an image and need ultrasound or whatever test applies. It is worth saying plainly: IRIS looks at the face it can look at, and the rest is what the lab tests are for.
Can it also count how many slabs go through the table?
Yes, but it is not set up the same way. An alert is asked for in a sentence: «tell me if a slab comes out with a crack». A count is drawn: somebody traces a line on the image and from then on every slab that crosses it adds one. A line cannot be described by talking, it has to be traced. Asking is for finding; counting is for measuring.

Not a recorded video, not an explanatory drawing: a summary of the real screen, with a different case every time it starts. There is a lot more behind it.

The building site
Who is watching when the load swings over somebody?
11 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 2 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
The prison
Who is watching the yard screen when the fight starts?
17 cases: 16 raise an alert when something happens and 1 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
Behind one camera you can put a person.Behind four thousand you cannot put anyone.
Adding a camera costs little; adding another pair of eyes does not. So the cameras keep growing and the attention does not. IRIS watches all four thousand at once and flags what matters today.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
We reply the same working day.
