What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A slag overflow is dealt with in minutes if somebody sees it, and takes a whole shift if nobody was watching that bay. The transit walkway is painted on the floor, and the camera knows where it is because somebody drew it once on the image. When the slag gets close to that area, the alert goes out with the camera, the time and the video, and the supervisor decides whether to close the passage.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS tell slag that lands in the vessel from slag that spills out?

Yes, because what it looks at is where it lands. The vessel area and the floor around it are drawn once on the image, and from then on hot material showing up outside the first one is what raises the alert. If the pour goes where it should, nothing fires. What is detected is the position, not the material.

How does IRIS know where the transit walkway is?

Because somebody at the plant draws it on the image. A walkway cannot be described in a sentence: it has to be traced. It is done once, with the mouse, over that camera’s frame, and from then on it is an area the system understands. Alerts are asked for by talking; zones and lines are drawn. They are two different things and they are not set up the same way.

Does IRIS stop the pour or call emergency services by itself?

It does neither. IRIS alerts whoever the plant has put in the rule and hands over the camera, the time and the video; from there a person decides. It does not identify the three workers on the walkway either: it sees that there are three people in an area the slag is heading for, not who they are. It does not recognise faces and does not compare them with anything.
