A jam like this costs product and hours of clearing, and the worst part is the stretch of time when the line keeps feeding bars against the blockage. The mill’s own system knows something has stopped; what it does not have is the picture of that stretch. With the camera, the shift supervisor sees the exact spot where it tangled, how many bars are in there and what happened in the seconds before.

It knows something has stopped, and that is already a lot. What it does not have is the picture. IRIS does not replace that system: it works alongside it and adds the exact section where it tangled, how many bars are in the pile and the video of the seconds before. With that, the shift knows whether to send people and from which side to go in, without walking down to look first.
How does it tell a stopped bar from a slow one?
By time, and the plant writes the time. The rule says how many seconds without moving count as a jam on that section, and that number is set by whoever knows the line, not by the system. On a slow section it will be several seconds; at the mill exit, far fewer. IRIS measures movement on the table and applies the threshold it has been given.
Can IRIS stop the line before more product goes in?
No. IRIS alerts, it does not act: it does not stop a line, it does not move a table and it does not send anybody anywhere. What it does is get the alert out while it is happening, to the pulpit and the shift supervisor at the same time, with the section and the video. Stopping the line is the plant’s decision and a person takes it.
