CAM-376

Arms inside the shear, with the machine still live

Night shift on the cutting line. An operator has leaned over the table and pushed both arms in under the blade. Inside, the plate is still glowing. The mesh guard has been swung out and propped to one side, with the sign forbidding any work without lockout still hanging on it. The panel lights are on, and so is the stack light. Two colleagues are watching from outside. IRIS sees hands inside and a machine that still has power.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • operator with both arms inside the shear
  • mesh guard swung open to one side
  • cutting line with the plate still hot
  • control panel with its lights on
  • two colleagues watching from outside

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 18 sTime with hands inside
  • 2 min 10 sTime with the guard open
  • 3People in shot
  • 2Plates on the table
  • 23:41Time

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

somebody puts their hands in the shear with the guard open and the machine still energised

Then

  1. alert the line supervisor with the camera and the exact time
  2. save the video from the guard being opened until the hands come out
  3. time how long the hands were inside
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if anybody puts their hands in the shear with the guard open and the machine not locked out.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

This does not turn up in a report: it turns up when somebody loses a hand. The maintenance manager knows lockout is written into the procedure; what he does not know is how many times a month it gets skipped. With the camera he gets the alert while it is happening, the video of the seconds before, and a count of how often the guard is opened without lockout. That turns the conversation into how the work is done, not who is to blame.

What people usually ask

Can IRIS stop the shear?

No. IRIS does not act on the machine: that is the job of the line’s own safety system and its interlocks. IRIS raises the alert while it is happening, with the camera, the time and the video, so that a person can decide. It is one more layer of watching, not a replacement for the guard.

How does the camera know the machine still has power?

From what is visible: the panel lights on, the stack light lit and the guard open with no lock fitted. The camera reads visible signals. The real electrical state comes from the plant’s lockout system, and IRIS works alongside it: it contributes the image and the exact minute.

Does this end up as a sanction for the operator?

The camera does not decide that. IRIS does not identify anybody: it sees an intervention without a guard, not a person with a name. What counts as an alert, what gets logged and what happens next is written by the plant. Usually it is used to change the procedure, which is where the real gain is.

A different case every time

We won't just tell you. We'll show you.

It is a summary of the real screen: it plays by itself, step by step, and shows only the path of one case. The actual tool has far more than fits in here.

And the best part

Sometimes you do not need an alarm:you need a number.

How many people came in, and when. You draw a line over the image and the camera counts. People counting is certified by the Centro Español de Metrología through NeuralPax.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
