A vehicle loading before dawn where nothing gets loaded

Three in the morning in the material yard. A van is parked tail-in beside the box of copper offcuts, both rear doors open, off the painted lane and at a spot where there is no loading dock. Two people are moving material by hand from the ground into the vehicle. Beside them there are billet bundles and coils. The machine that moves material is parked, with its grab resting on the ground. IRIS sees a load outside working hours and off the usual route.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • van stopped off the lane with its doors open
  • two people moving material by hand
  • box of copper offcuts
  • billet bundles on the ground
  • material handler parked with its grab down

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 03:12Time
  • 11 minTime with the vehicle stopped
  • 2People beside the vehicle
  • 6Trips between the box and the vehicle
  • 1Vehicles in the yard

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a vehicle loads in the material yard outside working hours and off the marked lane

Then

  1. alert the control post with the camera, the time and the exact spot
  2. save the video from the vehicle arriving until it leaves
  3. count the trips between the material box and the vehicle
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a vehicle loads in the material yard outside working hours and off the usual lanes.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

This does not get spotted by watching screens: it gets spotted in the stock count, weeks later, when tonnes are missing and there is no video left to look at. The camera does not say what is happening or why. It says that at three in the morning a vehicle is stopped off the lane, at a spot with no scheduled operation, and that material is moving towards it. From there the manager decides, with the video in front of him, whether to call somebody or whether it was a planned load.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS detect a theft?

No. IRIS detects a load outside working hours and off the usual route: a vehicle stopped where no operation is scheduled, and material moving towards it. Whether that is a theft, a planning error or an emergency is decided by a person with the video in front of them. The camera supplies the time and the image, not the conclusion.

Does it recognise the people who appear?

No. IRIS does not identify anybody and does not compare faces against any database. It sees two people loading beside a vehicle, not who they are. If identity has to be established, that belongs to the plant’s own procedure and to whoever has the authority to ask for it.

Do you have to light up the whole yard?

You do not have to turn night into day. The camera works with the light that is already there, and where that is not enough you fit a camera made for low light. What the image has to show is a vehicle, its open doors and people moving material, not a small label to be read.

Watch what happens. Then watch what IRIS does with it.

Not a recorded video and not a drawing: it is a summary of the real tool, with a different case each time round. The whole tool does not fit in a box.

  1. The alert fires
  2. It lands in the tray
  3. You open it
  4. You confirm or dismiss

And the best part

The disk fills up on its own.The questions stay unanswered.

Storing images is easy, and it is not cheap. What was missing was someone to look at them. IRIS looks at everything you record and shows you only what is worth a glance.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
