One person alone on the furnace platform

Late shift in the melt shop. Up on the raised platform, right by the furnace mouth, there is an operator in a hard hat and a short-sleeved shirt. A metre from him the stream of molten metal falls into the mould. He is wearing no aluminised clothing and no face shield. Down in the aisle three colleagues are watching, and one is pointing up. IRIS sees that somebody is inside the hot enclosure and times how long he stays.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • person on the furnace platform
  • open furnace mouth
  • molten stream falling into the mould
  • raised platform and its guardrail
  • three colleagues in the aisle below

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 1People inside the hot enclosure
  • 4 min 10 sTime inside
  • 3People in the aisle below
  • 0People in aluminised clothing
  • 19:05Time

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a person is on the furnace platform during a pour without thermal clothing or a face shield

Then

  1. alert the safety manager with the camera, the time and the image of the platform
  2. save the video from the moment the person goes up until they come down
  3. count how many people are inside the hot enclosure and how long they have been there
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if anybody goes up onto the furnace platform during a pour without thermal clothing.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

The safety manager hears about the furnace platform the next day, in a report, if anybody bothers to write one. And the rule here is not about PPE: it is about access. With the furnace pouring, nobody should be up there without the required protection. With the camera he knows how many people are inside the hot enclosure, how long they have been there and what they are wearing, and he has the video to talk it through with the shift the same afternoon.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know who went up onto the platform?

No. IRIS does not identify anybody and does not recognise faces. It sees that there is a person on the furnace platform during a pour and that they are not wearing thermal clothing, and it saves the video with the time. Who it was comes from the shift record, not from the camera.

Can the camera stop the pour?

No. IRIS does not act on any machine. It raises the alert with the image, the time and the exact minute, and whoever runs the shop decides what happens next. It does not stop the furnace and it does not send anybody anywhere: a person always makes that call.

Does it work with the glare from the furnace?

Yes. The camera is set up for the contrast of that spot, which is what you have to do when orange metal and a dark aisle share the same frame. What an ordinary camera cannot read is the shell temperature: for that there is a thermal camera on the furnace hot spot.

See it for yourself

A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.

An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.

  1. You draw the line
  2. It counts by itself
  3. A number comes out

And the best part

Behind one camera you can put a person.Behind four thousand you cannot put anyone.

Adding a camera costs little; adding another pair of eyes does not. So the cameras keep growing and the attention does not. IRIS watches all four thousand at once and flags what matters today.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
