In a bay like this, the first warning usually comes over the radio and depends on who happened to be looking. With the camera it goes out as soon as the flame appears, with the point, the time and video from before it started. And while it lasts, the supervisor can see which cameras still have people in them and which are clear. That is what you need to organise the head count without walking down into the bay to check.
What people usually ask
Does it alert sooner than a fire detector?
It depends where the fire is. A ceiling detector needs the smoke to reach it; a camera sees the flame as soon as it enters the frame, at whatever height. In a casting bay, with high roofs and hot air all the time, that difference shows. That said, the camera does not replace the fire detection system: it adds the picture and the minute, and works alongside what is already installed.
Won’t it trigger every time there are sparks from a cast?
No, if the rule is written properly. A casting bay has flame and sparks as its normal state, and the plant marks on the image where and when that is expected. IRIS alerts when fire appears outside those points, or when it lasts longer than a cast lasts. That rule is written by the plant with its own people; it does not come preset, and it is tuned over the first few weeks.
Does IRIS count the people who have evacuated?
It counts the people it sees in each frame, and that already helps: it says which cameras still have someone in them and which do not. It is not a list of names or a headcount of the workforce, because IRIS does not identify anyone. The official count at the muster point is done by the emergency organisation; the camera tells them where to look first, which in the first few minutes is exactly what is missing.
