Someone down in the channel

What changes for whoever answers for the site
Nobody climbs down into a channel expecting anything to happen to them. You go down for a ball, for a photo, or because you have gone down there all your life and nothing has ever happened. What you cannot see from up top is that a lined channel comes up fast and offers no way out: the way down is the only way back. Today that camera is on a screen almost nobody watches, and what is happening down there is found out when somebody phones in. With IRIS the alert arrives while the lad is still standing on the ledge, with the camera, the spot and the video. The person on duty decides whether to use the tannoy, send a patrol or close the access. IRIS does not go down and pull anyone out: all it does is make that decision possible sooner.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know the water is about to rise?
No. IRIS does not forecast floods, and it should not be asked to: that is the job of a hydrological system with its sensors across the catchment. What this camera sees is far simpler and is happening right here, right now: there is a person in the channel, and the water is above the third step of the way down. Both of those are visible in the image. Neither of them is a forecast.
Does it identify whoever has climbed down?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not read number plates and it does not store who anybody is. It detects that there is a person where the authority in charge of the channel has said there should not be one, and that does not require knowing their name. The alert says what is happening and where, never who.
What if it is a worker who is supposed to be down there?
Then the rule is written differently, and it is written by the authority in charge of the channel, not by IRIS. You can set working windows, a specific reach, or the days of a scheduled clean-up, and under those conditions the alert does not fire. What you cannot do is leave the rule so wide open that it never fires: an alert that never sounds protects nobody.
