A branch does not cover a camera overnight. It grows a few centimetres a week, for months, and that is exactly why nobody notices: today’s picture looks almost identical to yesterday’s. On the day the doorway video is needed, the doorway has been behind the leaves for half a year and nobody remembers when it stopped being visible. That is what changes here. IRIS compares what this camera sees now with what it used to see, and raises the alert once the covered area has grown enough. The alert comes with the camera, the time and the picture. And it comes in spring, while pruning can still be arranged, rather than in October once something has happened.

Who decides when the branch is really in the way?
You do. A branch covering a corner of sky bothers nobody; one covering the door you needed to watch does. So the alert does not depend on how much foliage there is, but on whether the vegetation reaches the part of the frame that matters to you. That part is marked once, on the image, and from then on IRIS alerts when it gets covered. It is the same camera with two different criteria, depending on where the tree grows.
The wind moves the leaves all day. Will it not alert constantly?
No. A leaf blown by the wind goes back where it was; a branch that has grown does not. IRIS does not look at one frame, it looks at the trend: how long that piece of the frame has been covered across days and weeks. A gust does not change the trend. That is why this alert does not arrive the day the wind picks up, but when the covered area has stayed covered.
And if the tree belongs to the council and the pruning is not ours to do?
It still helps, quite a lot. The alert can be deferred to the date pruning is scheduled, and in the meantime the camera stays flagged: it keeps recording, but anyone who opens it sees that part of the frame is not being covered. And it is on record since when. When the pruning has to be requested from someone else, that date and that picture are worth far more than a phone call.
